Four architects, four cities: crossed lives and works

Reflecting about the greatest moments of the urban experience in the Basque Country, I can only express my admiration for the renewal of the idea of the classical city – and the epiphany of the urban architecture that it represents – carried out in the space of a very few years: from 1782 with the Plaza Nueva in Vitoria to 1821 with the Plaza Nueva in Bilbao, in the midst of the Enlightenment. A period in which the prominence of these four cities and of four architects acting in them in a decisive manner is evident, both in the proposal of new and beautiful – sometimes singular – cities and in the renovation of these four historic capitals, transformed into centers of irradiation of the ideas for the new city of the Enlightenment.
